India Leaves China Behind in QS World Rankings, This Time 148 Universities Are Included
Wednesday, November 22, 2023

148 institutions from India have made it to the QS World University Rankings. With this, India has left China behind. This ranking has been released for the institutions of Asia. After India, China and Japan rank in this. Compared to last time, this time 37 more educational institutions of India have been included in it.

Last year, 111 educational institutions of India were included in this QS World Ranking, which has increased to 148 this time. In this QS ranking, IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai have been successful in making it to the top 50. At the same time, five other institutes including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IISc Bangalore are included in the top 100.

A total of 856 universities from 25 countries have been included in this ranking. This ranking is prepared on the basis of the quality of higher educational institutions across the world, the research being conducted in them, their demand among students and their performance in the world of education. It is published every year by a website named Topuniversities.com.

This ranking is released for BRICS countries in five regions of the world – Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe, Central Asia and the Arab region. The current ranking, which India tops, is for Asia. A total of 133 universities from China and 96 universities from Japan have been included in this year’s ranking.

Not only have more Indian institutions made it to this ranking, but their last year’s ranking has also improved. A total of 21 institutes from India have improved their rankings. At the same time, there has been no change in the ranking of 15 universities. IIT Mumbai, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras remain afloat with rankings of 40, 46 and 53 respectively.

At the same time, IISc Bangalore has now moved from 58 to 52 and IIT Kharagpur has moved from 61 to 59. The ranking of IIT Kanpur has increased from 66 to 63. The biggest jump has been made by IIT Guwahati, which has jumped straight from 124 to 111th position. At the same time, Jawaharlal Nehru University has moved from 119 to 117th position.

The ever-increasing number of institutions in India shows that the higher education sector in the country has improved significantly over the years. In the year 2014, only 16 institutions from India were included in this ranking. Now after 9 years this number has increased almost 10 times. However, Indian institutions are still lagging behind in global rankings.

India has made extraordinary progress in the field of research. Of the 10 best universities in Asia in terms of papers per faculty, 7 are Indian universities. At the same time, Anna University has achieved regional superiority in research productivity. It has secured first position in this index.
