Fromer Brazilian Presidient Dilma Vana Rousseff elected as new President of The New Development Bank (NDB), succeeding Marcus Troyjo. The New Development Bank (NDB), commonly known as the BRICS Bank, is a multinational financial organisation established by the five BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
“The Board of Governors unanimously elected H.E. Mrs. Dilma Vana Rousseff as the President of the Bank, effective immediately, in full accordance with the Articles of Agreement of the New Development Bank and the procedures of the President election,” the bank said in a statement.
Dilma Rousseff, an economist, was President of the Federative Republic of Brazil from January 2011 to August 2016. Rousseff was elected the President of Brazil for the second time in a row.
Previously, she served as Minister of Mines and Energy and Minister Chief of Staff in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s first two cabinets until 2010. At this time, she presided over the Petrobras Board of Directors, a state-owned Brazilian multinational business in the petroleum industry.
Rousseff championed multilateralism, sustainable development, human rights, and peace on the international stage, while respecting the sovereignty of all nations. Her government actively participated in international climate and environmental fora, culminating in Brazil’s pivotal role in attaining the Paris Agreement.
Rousseff also increased Brazil’s cooperation with Latin American, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries, notably the establishment of the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement with BRICS countries in July 2014. Rousseff’s leadership as President of the NDB contributed to the success of these projects.
