Libya is considering the possibility of joining the BRICS group of emerging economies, according to the acting Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour.

Al-Baour emphasized that the Libyan government is currently reviewing the potential advantages of becoming a member of the BRICS bloc.

Al-Baour stated this in an interview with Russian media outlet, TASS.

Benefits and value under review

Al-Baour stated that Libya‘s interest in joining BRICS hinges on the tangible benefits the country could receive from membership. “We are interested in joining, but joining is a guarantee of the value, the benefit that Libya can receive from joining the association,” Al-Baour said.

“In fact, we are currently studying the possibility of joining BRICS in government circles. This requires a deep study and assessment of the benefits Libya will receive from joining BRICS,” Al-Baour added.

He also noted that despite Libya’s interest, the country was not invited to the most recent BRICS summit. “Unfortunately, we were not even invited to the last BRICS summit, although we wanted to attend at least to learn more about the opportunities offered by this association,” Al-Baour concluded.

Growing interest in BRICS

Libya’s interest in joining BRICS comes amid increasing interest from other emerging markets seeking to diversify their economic partnerships.

BRICS has been positioning itself as an alternative to traditional Western-led financial institutions, aiming to provide a platform for economic cooperation among developing nations.
