'We Formed Our Club After G7 Shut the Door': Jaishankar on BRICS Expansion
Friday, October 18, 2024

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the BRICS originated when the G7 refused to admit new members and as the bloc evolved, it gained a life of its own and others recognised its value.

Speaking at the Global Center for Security Policy in Geneva, Jaishankar said, “…There was another club called G7 and you won’t let anyone else enter the club. So we went on to form our club…As it started it gained a life of its own over the period of time. Others saw value in it as well….”

Talking about the future of the global order, Jaishankar credited the city of Geneva, which hosts many UN organisations, more than any other to really construct what is a world order.

"If we talk about the future of the global order, we talk about the changes, challenges and prospects, this is a city where perhaps... which has done more than any other to really to construct what is a world order. The fact that it hosts so many UN organisations itself…

The fact that it hosts so many UN organisations itself is a testimony to those efforts…,” said the minister.

Jaishankar also expressed optimism about the future of the Quad alliance and hoped that the Quad summit will be held in the US in the coming days.

EAM Dr S Jaishankar says, "...We hope that in the coming days, we will have a Quad summit in the US...With the passage of time, there is an increase in reassurance in much of the Indo-Pacific, that it (Quad) is a net asset to the region..."

“Started my visit to Geneva by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. In a world of polarisation and conflict, Bapu’s message of harmony and sustainability is more relevant than ever,” he said in a post on X.
