India, Russia Set to Finalise Terms of Helicopter Joint Venture

India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and a partnership between Russian Helicopters and Russian export agency Rosoboronexport expect to finalise the terms of conditions of their joint venture (JV) to build Kamov Ka-226T ‘Hoodlum’ light multirole helicopters for the Indian military in the first quarter of 2018, according to Russian defence industrial holding group Rostec.

According to a Rostec statement on 10 January, the JV was agreed by the governments of India and Russia in October 2016, with a view to supplying the Indian military with 200 Ka-226T helicopters over nine years. Rostec confirmed that 60 of these helicopters will be assembled in Russia, with the JV – headquartered in Bangalore – initially producing components and then undertaking full assembly of the remaining 140 units.
